A fundamental part of the educational project is that concerning the dissemination of science to the general public. The INCTC, with support from the Blood Center of Ribeirão Preto, has participated in an important way of dissemination events such as National Week of Science and Technology and the meetings of the SBPC. Recently, the Blood Center purchased an inflatable dome for projection at 180 degrees with the purpose to disseminate science in the cities of the region. The original material, purchased with the equipment, is intended for the study of astronomy (planetarium) that will be adapted for the study of biology and hence the new name “celularium”. The first movie available, produced in Ribeirão Preto, allows a trip in 180 degrees, in the inner of an animal cell. During the National Week of Science and Technology, 2010, we held an exhibition called “Celularium: a viagem pela célula” (Celularium: a trip through the cell) in a shopping mall of Ribeirão Preto when the equipment was presented to the visitors.

The dissemination of knowledge is done through the pages of the Blood Center, House of Science, INCTC and LaNCE on the Internet. At INCTC website it is possible to find all information about the program (research projects, participating researchers, students, publications, reports, etc.), and a tool for the interaction among participating researchers. This intense activity involving the transfer of knowledge to broad sectors of society (teachers, students, patients, managers and general public) has professionals entirely dedicated to this function (journalists, programmers, educators, translators, video producers and managers), besides an adequate infrastructure (television studio, video-conferencing equipment, graphic-art stations, Internet servers of high-performance, etc.). The Blood Center TV, for example, is a tool that broadcasts via Internet, lectures and lessons that can be accessed from anywhere with access to broadband Internet.

Ceduc – Educational Center of the Blood Center

The Regional Blood Center develops extensive and continuous educational program for training and development of physicians, nurses, biologists, physical therapist and laboratory technicians. These activities are also offered to experts and researchers, including post-graduate and resident students in hemotherapy and hematology and undergraduate students. Courses and trainings are offered to biology teachers from elementary schools of the region of Ribeirão Preto.
The management of the educational activities is centralized in the CEDUC- Educational Center of the Blood Center, which allows the interaction between the knowledge produced in the areas of research and students of elementary school, as well as undergraduate and post-graduate students.
We highlight the project that will be implemented whose objective is the construction of a building designed for education. The project with a total area of 1,600m2 consists of classrooms, library, amphitheater, celularium, House of Science and rooms for pedagogical support.

CTC – Center for Cell-based Therapy

The project of the Center for Cell-based Therapy (CTC) focuses on advanced, basic, and applied research with stem cells (SC). The CTC consists of nine principal investigators (PIs) who are recognized leaders in Brazil in this research area. Twenty researchers and ten foreign collaborators participate in the CTC.
The present proposal provides continuity to and expands the experience acquired by the CTC in the initial CEPID project, with respect to the scientific content as well as the dissemination of knowledge and technology transfer to society, as can be seen at:
The scientific project involves an ambitious multidisciplinary research program whose objective is to study the cellular, molecular, and biological aspects of normal and pathological SC and to critically evaluate its therapeutic potential. The studies will be conducted with pluripotent SC (embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent SC) and somatic SC (hematopoietic SC, Mesenchymal SC, and Endothelial PC).
Regarding the ESC, we intend to generate Brazilian cell lines to be expanded and used in preclinical and clinical protocols, as well as to contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms of pluripotency.
We will generate iPSCs derived from patients with Dyskeratosis congenita, Fanconi Anemia, Hemophilia A, and Parkinson’s disease to understand the mechanisms involved in the pathology, maintenance of pluripotency, and in the process of cell differentiation.
Hematopoietic SC will be derived from ESC and iPSCs and cell lines will be established both from normal and leukemic SC for studies on the mechanisms involved in the control of normal and neoplastic hematopoiesis. Transgenic animal models of acute promyelocytic leukemia will be generated and used for basic and preclinical studies.
Cancer SC will be studied focusing on the mechanisms of transition Epithelium-Mesenchymal and Endothelial-Mesenchymal (EMT and EndMT). These mechanisms will also be studied in the context of cell reprogramming and in the generation of SC.
Clinical assays will be conducted using mesenchymal SC in the treatment of types 1 and 2 insulin-dependent diabetes, severe refractory Aplastic Anemia, in the prevention of chronic and acute Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and in the failure of grafting in haploidentical allogeneic transplantation.

Finally processes will be developed for the production of SC on large-scale under GMP conditions for their clinical use.
