Research Overview | The focus of our research is on the understanding of the molecular basis of signal transduction in cell proliferation, invasion, differentiation and neoplastic transformation, and on the use of this knowledge to propose new therapeutic targets and prognostic markers. Proteomic and gene expression strategies are applied to identify and characterize signaling pathways controlled by two protein markers in cancer. Another area is the identification and functional characterization of miRNAs involved in apoptosis and metastasis which contribute to resistance of tumor cells, consequently affecting the survival of cancer patients. For this study, we are applying PCR array systems for genes and miRNA expression and also miRNA microarray to obtain the profile of expression in cell lines with the cancer marker overexpressed or down-regulated by siRNA or shRNA. Epigenetic alterations are also identified using PCR array systems. A xenograft model in nude mice has been adopted to investigate the role of these markers in head and neck carcinoma. | |
